A Canadian man who fancied a trip to New York City got caught more than 420 miles short, at the U.S. border, after stealing a canoe and paddling from the Great White North with a stolen shovel.

According to the St. Catherine's Standard, the unidentified man allegedly swiped the boat and the makeshift oar early Thursday morning on the Canadian side of the Niagara River, then paddled to Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, N.Y., where he beached the boat and began to hoof it. He was spotted by border guards and was arrested and charged with illegal entry into the United States.

U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Michael Scioli told the paper, "It was 2 a.m., so it was kind of unusual for someone to come from that area that early in the morning."
