The sky was the limit for the new James Bond film at the weekend box office.
The 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, opened with an estimated 87.8 million dollars from Friday through Sunday, a U.S. debut record for the franchise. The total surpassed the 67.5 million raked in by the 2008 Bond flick Quantum of Solace during its premiere weekend.
Skyfall also earned 2.2 million dollars from Thursday-night previews. Overall, it has collected 518.6 million worldwide, having opened in several foreign markets before arriving in the U.S.
Last week’s box office champ, Wreck-It Ralph, fell to second place, drawing 33.1 million.
Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln opened strongly in limited release, raising 900 thousand dollars in just 11 theaters. It expands nationwide this Friday.
